Conductor’s Corner
Albert Semprini, the well known British pianist, used to introduce his long running BBC Radio programme “Semprini Serenade” with the words: “Old ones, new ones, loved ones, neglected ones.” This statement also aptly describes the Palm Court Light Orchestra’s 2010/11 season.
We begin the season in September with the return, by popular demand, of Frederick Hodges, that remarkable ragtime pianist from San Francisco. The Orchestra complete with saxophones, a tuba and banjo will once again assemble around Frederick’s piano to bring you that foot tapping music from the Roaring Twenties.
Our November concert completely changes the mood when young Philadelphia violinist Ann Fontanella will be the soloist in a tribute to the Viennese violinist Fritz Kreisler and Jascha Heifetz. We will also feature film music from John William’s “Schindler’s List” and that delightful British film “Ladies in Lavender” starring Maggie Smith and Judi Dench.
In February we feature Calgary soprano Michelle Todd in a programme devoted to British musical theatre including music by Edward German, Gilbert & Sullivan, Noel Coward and, everyone’s favourite, Ivor Novello. We might even include selections from Lionel Bart’s smash hit “Oliver” and perhaps some Andrew Lloyd Webber. See you there!
Please join me in the 2010/11 season and invite your friends!
Charles Job, Founder/Conductor
What is Palm Court Music?
Palm Court music brings forth images of potted palms, gracious grand hotels and ballroom dancers in elegant evening dress. The Palm Court Light Orchestra typically plays popular light classics from the early 1900s as well as marches, ragtime, and musical gems from the early days of cinema, between the two world wars. It is best described as light-hearted music that sends you home smiling!
